Administrative / biographical background: |
The Charing Cross Railway was incorporated by the Charing Cross Railway Act 1859 which authorised the construction of a railway commencing by a junction with the South Eastern Railway near Bermondsey Street in the parish of St Olave Southwark and terminating at Hungerford Street in the parish of St Martins in the Fields, Westminster. The scheme was supported by the South Eastern Railway Company; in fact four of the Charing Cross Railways's nine directors were also directors of the South Eastern Railway Company. The South Eastern Railway required the line to gain access to Central London in competition with the threat of the proposed Victoria Station. The line was opened on 11 Jan 1864. The Charing Cross Railway was leased by the South Eastern Railway immediately from its incorporation and became vested in the South Eastern Railway by the powers of the Charing Cross Railway Act 1863. |
