Under the Bute Docks (Transfer) Act 25th June 1886, the Bute Docks Company was constituted and the Cardiff Docks and Railways connected therewith were transferred from Marquis of Bute and others to this company as from 31st December 1886.

The name of the company was changed to the Cardiff Railway Company under section 60 of the Cardiff Railway Act, 6th August 1897.

The Cardiff Railway Company was amalgamated with Great Western Railway Company as from 1st January 1922 by the Great Western Railway (Western Group) Preliminary Amalgamation Scheme 25th March 1922.
