Administrative / biographical background:

The Birkenhead Railway Company was incorporated under the Birkenhead Railway Act of 1st August 1859. Section 27 of the act provided for a change of name from the Birkenhead, Lancashire & Cheshire Junction Railway Company (incorporated under an act of 26th June 1846), to the Birkenhead Railway Company.

The company's predecessors included the Chester & Birkenhead Railway, (incorporated under act of 12th July 1837) which amalgamated with the Birkenhead, Lancashire & Cheshire Junction Railway by an act of 22nd July 1847.

Birkenhead Railway Company was vested in London & North Western and Great Western Railways jointly by Birkenhead Railway (Vesting) Act 11th July 1861, and was managed by a Joint Committee appointed for the purpose. The functions of this committee passed to London & North Western and Great Western Railways Joint Committee by their minuted resolution of 4th October 1867, and this committee became London Midland & Scottish and Great Western Railways Joint Committee as from 1st January 1923, ceasing on nationalisation of the railways on 1st January 1948.

The Birkenhead Railway Company passed to British Transport Commission under the Transport Act 1947.
