Administrative / biographical background:

The Axholme Joint Railway Committee was established by the North Eastern Railway Act of 31st July 1902. The committee was responsible for the Goole and Marshland Light Railway Company and the Axholme Light Railway Company, both of which had been incorporated under the Light Railways Act of 1896 and 1898, confirmed by Order of the Light Railway Commissioners and by the Board of Trade, on 11th March and 17th August 1898 respectively.

By the act of 1902, these companies were dissolved, transferred to and vested in the North Eastern and Lancashire & Yorkshire railway companies jointly, 3 directors from each of these two companies to form a Joint Committee for the management of the joint undertaking.

The Axholme Joint Railway Committee was vested in the British Transport Commission under Transport Act 1947.
