Administrative / biographical background:

The Alexandra (Newport) Dock Company was incorporated by the Alexandra (Newport) Dock Act 6th July 1865. In 1882, the name of the company was changed to The Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway Company by the Act of that year. The company was responsible for the construction of docks, and later railways and docks, in and around Newport and South Wales.

The company was vested in the Great Western Railway Company as from 1st January 1922 under the Great Western (Western Group) Preliminary Amalgamation Scheme 25th March 1922.
