The Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast Railway Company was incorporated in July 1861 by the Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast Railway Company Act. It was responsible for the construction of various railway lines from Aberystwyth, and to this end had agreements with Oswestry and Newtown, Llanidloes, Mid Wales, Shrewsbury and Welshpool Railways.

The company amalgamated with the Cambrian Railway Company by the Cambrian and Coast Railways (Amalgamation) Act of 5 July 1865. By virtue of the Great Western Railway (Western Group) Preliminary Amalgamations Scheme, the Cambrian Railway Company amalgamated with the Great Western Railway Company in March 1922.
