Administrative / biographical background:

The Aberdare Valley Railway Company was incorporated under the Aberdare Valley Railway Act on 2nd July 1855. It was leased to the Vale of Neath Railway for 10 years as from 1st January 1857, and then, by the provisions of the Vale of Neath Railway Act 21st July 1859, was purchased by that company on 1st January 1864. The Vale of Neath Railway Company amalgamated with the Great Weatern Railway by the provisions of the Great Western Railway (Vale of Neath Amalgamation) Act 10th August 1866.
