Administrative / biographical background:

In 1976 the UNESCO and Multilateral Aid Institutions Departments were merged to form a new UN Department, which was subdivided into 'A' and 'B' departments. The departments were reunited as the United Nations and Commonwealth Department (UNCD) in 1984.

During this period the UNCD B department took on some of the work formerly undertaken by the International and General Department (IG Series), relating to international organisations, other than the UN, as well as international development funds and banks. Also, multilateral aid policy in general, the world food situation and relations with the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
