Most of the files belong to the GAS series, which was raised for the use of the Ministry of Fuel and Power's Gas Division, and which was continued in use in divisions of the same name by that ministry's successors. The records relate to all aspects of the administration of the gas industry; subjects covered include the determination of gas standards, the supply of raw materials and of gas, storage, pricing, by-products, licensing, offshore gas flaring, depletion policy, gas gathering pipelines, energy legislation, the development of gas fields, the corporate plan of the British Gas Corporation (BGC), labour relations and area gas boards. The series also contains unregistered records of the (Heyworth) Committee of Enquiry into the Gas Industry (1944-1945), as well as two files in the NG series of the Gas Division of the Ministry of Fuel and Power (which relate to the nationalisation of the gas industry). Papers relating to the Gas Act 1965, the1968 Gas Bill and the Energy Act 1976 are also to be found in this series. Before 1942 these are records of the Standards, the Power, Transport and Economic, and the Industries and Manufactures Departments of the Board of Trade. The majority of these early records are registered files (in the H/ST, R/ST, ST, PTE, IM and E series) of the Standards, the Power, Transport and Economic and the Industries and Manufactures Departments. Initially the functions transferred from the Board of Trade to the Ministry of Fuel and Power in 1942 were carried out by the ministry's Gas and Electricity Division, the registered files of which, in the GE series, are also contained in this series, as are the files, in the GT series, used by the ministry's Gas Testing Branch. Files in the GT series contain material from the interwar period created by the Gas Referees, and a little later material created by the Board of Trade's Gas Testing Section. |
