Description:

Folios 296-299B. Letter from [John Rolle, MP for Devon] enclosing correspondence [including that at HO 42/20/126 folios 283-284] regarding Maria Newman. Enclosed is a letter of 21 May to [George Winne], Mayor of Plymouth, from William Bulbeck at Havant [Hampshire] reporting that he had not found Royal Admiral at St Helen's [Isle of Wight], that the Portsmouth magistrates had ruled that they could not order Newman to prison, and that the Keeper of the Gosport Bridewell had accepted her, after drinking 2 bottles of wine, on the same basis as those convicts for whom he had received orders. Enclosed is the receipt given to Bulbeck by William Adams, dated 19 May, for the body of Jane alias Maria Newman and for 2½ guineas for her keep and delivery aboard Royal Admiral.
