1 individual petition (James Dorton, the prisoner) on behalf of James Dorton, cordwainer, convicted at the Cheshire Lent Assizes in March 1834 for attempting to drown Ema Robinson. Grounds for clemency: has witnesses to say he was 2 miles away when it happened, married 3 years ago, no family near, no money, lived in same town (Hyde) 13 years, no previous conviction, did not have time to find witnesses between arrest and trial. Initial sentence: commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: character not known. Annotated: nil. LT23
