Administrative / biographical background: |
War Pensions Committees were local committees appointed by the Minister of Pensions and consisted of representatives of disabled ex-servicemen, women dependants or widows of such men, local authorities, employers and workmen engaged in industry, and voluntary associations providing services for ex-servicemen and their families within the area. The functions of the committees were to make recommendation to the minister as to the administration of pensions, to receive reports from officers as to the date and progress of applications, to hear and consider complaints by pensioners or claimants, to enquire into any matter referred to these by the minister or the Special Grants Committee, to make arrangements for the distribution of any supplementary grants and to consider applications for grants from such departments, bodies or organisations as the minister might specify. They also undertook the care of children for whom special provision was needed and they were required to take steps to secure the assistance and co-operation of voluntary workers in their work. |
