The Medical Department dealt with medical questions such as general medical advisory services, control of sick absenteeism, diagnosis of prescribed diseases, assessment of disablement in claimants for industrial injury benefits, medical appeal machinery, research and liaison with other interested bodies, for example, the Ministry of Health.

The medical staff of the department consists of a number forming a headquarters division and others attached to each region. The part-time services of a number of general medical practitioners are utilised in diagnosis, and assessment of disability in respect of claimants and in the medical appeal machinery.
