Administrative / biographical background:

Death grants, payable to relations of the deceased to defray funeral and allied expenses, were introduced by the National Insurance Act 1946 and were first paid for deaths occurring on or after 5 July 1949. The original conditions of the grant, its amount and the contributions to be made towards it have been amended.
