Journal of the HMS Griffin for 7 November 1832 to 6 November 1833 by Alexander Bryson, Assistant Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in England and on the Western Coast of Africa.

Folio 10: case no 10, William Wilcox, aged 21, seaman; disease or hurt, this man was sent on board the ship by ordered of the Admiral at Plymouth from HMS San Josef and soon displayed symptoms of fatuity rendering him unfited to perform duties; taken ill, 11 May 1833; invalided 11 May 1833 sent by HMSV Pluto from Fernando Po to Ascension for passage to England.

Folios 19-20: Surgeon's general remarks. The ship arrived in River Gambia and proceeded to Fernando Po via Sierra Leone and Princess Island. On the ship's return from Fernando Po two individuals were seized with fever of sporadic nature. while the ship stationed in the River Gambia a considerable number of bowels complaints took place, the individuals were seized with severe pain in the belly, frequently in the site of the arch of the colon accompanied with vomiting or purging. In the beginning of September after the ship returned from a cruize to the Cape de Verde Islands many of the crew were seized with fever owing to the changeable weather and the crew were not yet climatized.
