Stephen Harold SPENDER: British. His Communist beliefs deriving from anti-fascism as the result of travel in Germany in the 1930s, SPENDER joined the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) in 1937 and in the same year carried out investigations in Gibraltar with Lord Marley on behalf of the Soviet Embassy in London. By 1941 he had abandoned Communism and was co-editor of the journal 'Horizon'. He had become anti-Communist by 1951 at the latest and in 1955 was editor of 'Encounter' |
