Title: | English House Condition 1991 Survey: Physical Survey dataset |
Description: |
This dataset contains data relating to the Physical Survey of the 1996 English House Condition Survey. The Physical Survey interview was one of four main components of the 1996 EHCS. It was intended as a survey of dwellings to provide a description of the stock, its present condition and its energy characteristics.
The Physical Survey (which began in April 1996) followed on from the Household Survey. Surveyors were required to undertake a full inspection of the property for all addresses at which a successful interview had taken place, and all addresses which had been identified as vacant. For a full inspection, the surveyors gathered detail on the physical condition of the exterior of the dwelling; this was done according to a viewing system that took in front, back, left and right views of the property, as appropriate. They recorded descriptions of the basic elements of the building fabric: roof, windows, walls, etc. and other amenities and services, and to indicate where faults were found and the work required to remedy these faults. Further, they surveyed the interior of the house, and its heating amenities; common parts of the dwelling; construction of the interior, and part of the exterior; and the environment of the plot, block and area of the dwelling. For all remaining addresses, neither a full inspection nor contact with the householder was required. Instead the surveyors were simply asked to provide information on basic characteristics of the dwelling, for example its type, age and likely condition; the presence and condition of shared facilities and services in blocks of flats or on estates; and an assessment of the environment in which the dwelling was located. In addition to completing a survey form, photographs of the dwellings and the local environment were taken. This dataset contains 28 tables. |
