Title: Survey of Rural Services: 2000 dataset
Description: This dataset contains data which was gathered during the fourth Survey of Rural Services (RSS). The 2000 RSS had two components: a postal survey of parish councils, as in previous sweeps of the RSS, and a geospatial analysis of existing datasets on rural service outlets, which was a new element in the 2000 survey. These components are reflected in the dataset, which comprises four types of tables (four tables for each of the eight regions of the survey):

Full settlement tables, which present the results of the parish postal survey at the most basic unit of data gathering - the"settlements" within a parish (i.e. one record per settlement).
Parish aggregation tables, which present the postal survey data aggregated to the level of parishes (i.e. one record per parish).
Tables (referred to as 'settlement services summary' tables) summarising the geographical availability of service outlets at settlement level. This data was derived from the analysis, using GIS software, of external data sources on the location of service outlets. The tables record the distance from the centroid of each settlement to the nearest service outlet (e.g. schools, cash machines), expressed in eleven 2 kilometre bands.
Ward level services tables (also derived from the analysis of external data sources), which record, for each type of service outlet, the number of households in the ward that fell within a particular distance band of the nearest service outlet.

It should be noted that while the dataset relates to the 2000 sweep of the RSS, not all of the data can be dated to 2000. The full settlement and parish aggregation tables reflect returns which parish councils submitted up to 17 January 2001. In addition, when the data was downloaded from the Countryside Agency's website in 2002, the website indicated that the parish aggregation files had been"enlarged as of 13/5/02 to include further variables" (it is not known which variables had been added). Furthermore, the explanatory notes accompanying the files on ward level services indicated that they were"2001 updates", based on a re-analysis of updated versions of the external datasets on the location of service outlets (by contrast, the 'settlement services summary' tables appear to have been based on the 2000 versions of the same sources).

The data structure and format of this dataset differs from earlier transfers of RSS data. Instead of being divided by county, the data is grouped by region and by transformational view. The dataset contains 32 tables, comprising four transformations of the original data from the parish postal survey component of the survey and the geospatial analysis of external data sources. The regions correspond to Government Office Regions.
