Heinz Israel KAMNITZER: German. KAMNITZER was one of the earliest German-Jewish pre-World War II refugees to the UK, arriving here in 1933. A dedicated Communist, he had allegedly been a youth activist in the KPD and became very active in German ?migr? communist circles in London. In 1939-1940 he was editor of the short-lived periodical 'Inside Nazi Germany' published by the 'Friends of the German Peoples Front', a KPD penetrated organisation, in 1942 was employed by the Association of Scientific Workers, and was associated with the Free German League of Culture. Interesting known associates included Peter SMOLLETT SMOLKA and Juergen KUCZYNSKI, and between 1936 and 1940 he shared a flat with two other German communists at Lawn Road Flats, Hampstead. After the war KAMNITZER returned to East Berlin where he became a University professor active in the 'Peace' movement |
