Administrative / biographical background:

The South Asia Department dealt with the Indian sub-continent and also such broader questions as the Asian Development Bank, established in 1966 to promote economic and social development in the region by lending funds and technical co-operation to member countries of Asia and the Pacific. Functions relating to the administration of the Colombo Plan, previously exercised by the Commonwealth Office Asia Economic Department, were passed to the South Asia Department on the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968.
