Paul BORCHARDT: German. An explorer and expert on the Libyan desert, BORCHARDT was a German agent during the First World War operating under the name Abdel Hamid Batoota. He came to the UK as a refugee in 1939 but shortly afterwards went to the USA where in 1942 he was prosecuted as a spy and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment
