Administrative / biographical background: |
The Contracts Division (renamed the Contracts (Highways) Division in 1971) was established in 1962 and took over the work which had previously been done by the Highways Management and Services Division. The Contracts Division was responsible for the provision of standard forms of contract for road and bridge work on motorways, trunk and classified roads. It was also responsible for the letting of individual contracts, either directly or through agent authorities, for trunk road and motorway works and for the examination and consideration of claims by contractors. In addition it was responsible for contracts for stores and services required by other divisions of the Ministry. It negotiated agreements with local authorities to act as the Minister's agents for the maintenance, improvement and repair of, or other dealings with, trunk roads under Section 10 of the Highways Act 1959, and with consulting engineers and architects for the preparation and supervision of major schemes for the construction of motorways and trunk roads. |
