Administrative / biographical background: |
The Highways Special Roads Division was set up in 1958 as part of the Highways Administration group. Some of its functions were previously the responsibility of the Highways Trunk Roads Division. It was created because of the increase in work caused by the construction of a new and expanding motorway system and resulting legislation programme arising from the Special Roads Act 1949. Its functions covered all aspects of policy on legislation, construction and operation of motorways and trunk roads including ancillary services and work instructions. In 1965 the Division was renamed Special Roads A Division and in 1968 became part of the Highways General Division. |
