Tyler KENT: American. KENT, a cipher clerk at the US Embassy in London, was detained in May 1940 on suspicion of improperly providing information derived from his employment to Anna WOLKOFF an active member of the Right Club in correspondence with the renegade William JOYCE [''Lord Haw Haw''] and in contact with Italian diplomats in London; and to Captain Maule RAMSAY MP, founder of the Right Club. Kent's diplomatic immunity was withdrawn by Ambassador Kennedy and a search of his flat revealed a mass of copied classified material together with the membership records of the Right Club which had been given to Kent for safe keeping. Kent was tried on five charges under Section 1 of the Official Secrets Act and two under the Larceny Act in October 1940 and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. On his release in November 1945 he was deported to the USA |
