Administrative / biographical background: |
Following the National Health Service Act 1946, local insurance committees were replaced by 138 executive councils. Each executive council (EC) was responsible within its area for the general administrative control of doctors, dentists, chemists and opticians. The ECs, which were themselves under departmental control from the Ministry of Health, were expected to maintain a liaison with their local and regional medical, dental, pharmaceutical and ophthalmic advisory committees. ECs were replaced by Family Practitioner Committees in April 1974. |
