Description: |
Karl EITEL, alias Conrad EBERLE, Charles Rene GROSS: born in Alsace, EITEL was recruited by the Abwehr in 1934, when he was working as a waiter on the SS Bremen plying between Germany and New York, to procure American technical publications and to report on US port fortifications, shipping and aircraft. During the Second World War he served in Brest in the provision of meteorological and shipping reports. In 1943 he went to Lisbon to report on Allied anti-submarine devices and for a time was in touch with American Intelligence. He claimed when captured to be working in the Allied interest, but this was eventually assessed to be a false claim |
