Description: |
Hans ZECH-NENNTWITCH, alias Joachim NANSEN, codename COLUMBINE: a former Waffen SS Officer and adjutant to Himmler, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 allegedly for helping a Polish resistance group, but he escaped and came to Britain via Sweden as a defector. ZECH-NENNTWITCH provided much intelligence of value to the Allies and was used to broadcast anti-Nazi material back to Germany. Although given an official post in the reconstruction of Germany, he was later brought before a de-Nazification court and in 1964 sentenced to 4 years' imprisonment for his past in shooting Polish Jews. Later he became a much-publicised escapee from his Brunswick prison, only to give himself up after 4 months on the run |
