Description:

This series contains Ministry of Health files relating to the establishment of the National Health Service which came into force on 5 July 1948. The files concern a preliminary survey of hospitals (1940 onwards), and the early planning of post-war health policy, including discussions with the medical profession and other bodies, the Spens Committee on the remuneration of dentists, general practitioners, consultants and specialists, and the Teviot Committee on Dentistry. There is some material on implementation, especially concerning transfer of hospitals, and papers of the NHS 20th Anniversary Conference.
