Joint hospital boards were authorised under the Public Health Act 1875, which empowered local sanitary authorities to combine for the purpose of establishing and maintaining local hospitals. This power was not extensively used but did lead to the establishment of isolation hospitals, mental hospitals, sanatoria and centres for mental defectives. The boards came to an end with the inception of the National Health Service. |
