Description:

1 item (enclosure in Sir Fredrick Roger's letter of 25 April 1864 to the Under Secretary of State for War) extracted from WO 32/8275. 'Map of the Seat of War Province of Auckland New Zealand Compiled from Admiralty Charts, Land Surveys, Hochstetter's Geological Map and Maori Sketches Feb 1864': map of area between 175° 31' E and 177° E and between 36° 30' S and 39° S. Shows terrain (coastline, lakes, rivers, hills); Maori villages; towns, place names, harbours; military roads, British redoubts, sites of dated military engagements. Reference table. No scale shown; a pencilled note suggests 1 inch to 4 miles [1:253,440]. Inset: 'Detailed Sketch Shewing the British and Maori Positions Feb. 1864'. Signed by Andrew Sinclair, Chief Government Surveyor. Originally enclosed in Fredrick Whitaker's despatch no 23 of 9 February 1864 to the Duke of Newcastle; then transmitted to the War Office for copying. Part of the map shows pencilled grid lines. This is one of the manuscript maps stated to have been used in the compilation of WO 78/5708 and WO 78/5709
