This series contains records of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food animal welfare branch and divisions from 1963 dealing with the welfare of all farm animal species on the farm, in transit to slaughterhouses or for export, and at slaughtering. It includes many files dealing with the repercussions of the work of the Technical Committee to Enquire into the Welfare of Animals Kept Under Intensive Livestock Husbandry Systems (Brambell Committee). Other subjects of the series are the Slaughter of Poultry Act 1967; the European Convention for the protection of animals during international transport; the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1968 Part 1 (welfare of livestock); the work of the Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (FAWAC); and the Ponies Act 1969. Many early files have pre-1965 papers re-registered from the TAY series ( MAF 287) |

The Technical Committee to Enquire into the Welfare of Animals Kept Under Intensive Livestock Husbandry Systems (Brambell Committee) was appointed by ministers to examine the conditions in which livestock was kept under systems of intensive husbandry and to advise whether standards should be set to safeguard its welfare interests and if so, what they should be. Its report was published in 1965 as Cmnd 2836. |
