Administrative / biographical background:

The National Maritime Institute was set up on 1 July 1976 to continue and develop the maritime work formerly carried out by the National Physical Laboratory, under the control of the Royal Society in 1900 and then under the aegis of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research from 1918.

The institute's responsibilities were research into marine navigation, marine meteorology, the performance, handling and safety of ships and off-shore structures, based on both hydrodynamic and aerodynamic research, as well as related aspects of civil engineering.

The institute was equipped with major facilities for carrying out experiments with models and also has the resources for carrying out many calculation, performance predictions and design studies. These facilities operated for the benefit of the government and industry at large. The research was almost all commissioned and paid for by individual companies.
