Description:
Content: Folios 385-386. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from W H T Hawley, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Tynemouth Poor Law Union Workhouse on 29 July 1850; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates. There is one yard for the men and boys, the women and girls are separated. The provision of the sick is sufficient in ordinary cases, but as there is no infections ward, the medical officer had to place several cases of itch on the female receiving ward. The workhouse girls' school is well managed, but there are several cases of itch. Walking out and ocean bathing are two of the means used to keep it in check. The boys attend the National school and there are 3 cases of itch. Able men break 200 cwt of stone which occupies about 2 hours. Persons who visit the paupers are admitted to the day rooms and school as there is no reception room. He suggests that the Board write to the guardians calling their attention to this, as well as to the need for an infections ward. Annotated: write to the guardians as suggested. Paper Number: 37291/1850. Poor Law Union Number 333. Counties: Northumberland.
