Description:
Content: Folios 533-534. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Mr Pigott, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Newport Pagnell Poor Law Union Workhouse on 13 January 1851; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates. He reports that the porter is also the schoolmaster. He also notes that there are an unusually high number of able bodied inmates which he attributes to a situation in the parish of Hardmead. Two and a half years ago certain cottages in this parish were pulled down and their occupants forced to move to neighbouring parishes. 11 able bodied men, nine of whom were married with children, returned to the land where their cottages had been, gave up their work and applied to the relieving officer to be admitted into the workhouse. He also notes a dangerous lunatic, handcuffed in one of the wards and under charged who has been removed from Bedford and will shortly be removed to a lunatic asylum. Paper Number: 7582/1851.
