Description:

Records of the various divisions of the Fisheries Department which refer to all aspects of policy formulation, legislation and administrative matters covering sea and river fishing, whaling, fish farming and shellfishing.

The series includes files on the department's relations with the International Whaling Commission, the Atlantic fisheries commissions, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, the European Economic Community, sea fisheries committees, the White Fish Authority, and river conservancies, boards and authorities. Subjects covered include marine, river and lake pollution, sea fishing limits and territorial waters, fish stock levels, fish diseases, research vessels and stations, and port, dock and harbour improvements and on fishery matters in Wales.

Some earlier files have been re-registered into the FGB series.

The White Fish Authority, established in 1951, has wide executive powers to use its finances to undertake certain commercial activities and to assist those engaged in the fishing industry; to prepare schemes for the industry; and to provide loans for the purchase of vessels, gear and processing plant and grants for the purchase of certain types of vessel. It is assisted by a White Fish Industry Advisory Council.
