Content: Folios 229-230. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Lord Courtenay, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Southampton Incorporation Workhouse on 3 December 1849; includes details of medical provision, management of school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates. Under the heading of the School Courtenay says 'Neither the Schoolmaster or Schoolmistress reside on the premises. The latter has been recently appointed. The Guardians decline any visits from the Education Inspector, and consequently pay the whole salaries' but adds 'the children appear clean'. He does not recommend any interference on the part of the Poor Law Board. The guardians are 'very jealous of external interposition' but may adopt suggestions if they are 'cautiously and gradually made'. Paper Number: 34995/1849. Poor Law Union Number 407.
