Description:
Content: Folios 400-404. Letter from Robert Uphill, Old Down, near Radstock to the Poor Law Commission enclosing copies of depositions in the case of Joyce Bryant, apologising for delay due to business, and noting the charge for copying the depositions was 2 guineas. Copies of witness depositions taken at Publow by Uphill on 12 February 1847, and by adjournment to 20 February 1847, on the body of Joyce Bryant, from: Marcia Bryant, daughter; Hannah Hanny, neighbour; Mr Flower, Relieving Officer, Keynsham Union No.1 District; John Dudden, Relieving Officer, Clutton Poor Law Union No.2 District; Charles Howell Collins. The depositions give evidence in relation to claims for pay roles of relieving officers in Publow and Flower in Compton Dando; support from family and friends in Bristol and Publow; changes to practice for out relief to non-residents in the Keynsham Union under the new Settlement Act; relief offered by Clutton Poor Law Union; the post mortem examination and cause of death; and the jury's verdict of death due to starvation but since the deceased had refused the house or relief in her own parish, they felt that the relieving officers could not be blamed for this. Annotated: send post order for £2 2s to the coroner and request his receipt. Afterwards bring back. Inform complainant of depositions and terms of the verdict. Write to the two boards of guardians for explanations. Paper Number: 5344/B/1847. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
