Description:

Folios 29-30: James A Poland, aged 44, Captain; disease or hurt, orchitis (chronic), sarcocele syphilitic and hydrocele. Sent to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 7 February 1877. Rejoined the ship, 15 May 1877. Nearly well, 30 August 1877. Had contracted syphilis four years previously in England and had suffered secondary symptoms since. His left testicle had been swollen for nearly a year.

Folio 30: Arthur J Robinson, aged 23, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, fracture of skull. Died, 8 February 1877, at Singapore. Fell fifty feet from aloft and struck the bridge rail. He fell at 4pm and died at 7pm. He was sober at the time of the accident.

Folios 31-33: Frederick Fulham, aged 28, Signalman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea and eczema. Put on sick list, 16 September 1876, at Singapore. Sent to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 6 February 1877, and invalided to England, 27 February 1877.

Folios 33-34: John Lee, aged 21, Private Royal Marine Light Infantry; disease or hurt, febris continued and syphilis primary. Put on sick list, 22 December 1876, at Singapore. Discharged to the Civil Hospital at Singapore, 27 March 1877.

Folios 34-35: Mr George Cherry, aged 28, Lieutenant Royal Navy; disease or hurt, syphilis primary and secondary. Put on sick list, 19 March 1877, at Singapore. Discharged to the General Hospital at Shanghai, 3 September 1877. Rejoined the ship, 6 October 1877.

Folio 36: James Peake, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, syphilis and gonorrhoea. Put on sick list, 2 April 1877, at Singapore. Transferred to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 15 May 1877.

Folios 36-38: James Meacher, aged 41, Blacksmith; disease or hurt, febris continued and dysentery. Put on sick list, 8 February 1877, at Singapore. Sent to the Civil Hospital at Singapore, 15 April 1877, and subsequently invalided.

Folio 38: Joseph Cohen, aged 22, Sick Berth Attendant; disease or hurt, febris continued. Put on sick list, 18 April 1877, at Singapore. Sent to the Civil Hospital at Singapore, 21 April 1877, and subsequently invalided, 16 August 1877. Sent to the hospital because the sick berth was full. With a clinical sheet at folio 38.

Folios 39-40: Robert Ford, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, febris continued. Put on sick list, 5 April 1877, at Singapore. Sent to the Civil Hospital at Singapore, 21 April 1877. With a clinical sheet at folio 39.

Folio 40: William Giles, aged 23, Butcher; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 20 April 1877, at Singapore. Sent to the Civil Hospital at Singapore, 21 April 1877.

Folios 40-41: George Spanswick, aged 31, Stoker; disease or hurt, febris continued. Put on sick list, 14 April 1877, at Singapore. Discharged to the Civil Hospital at Singapore, 18 April 1877. With a clinical sheet at folio 41.

Folios 41-42: Clayton Connard, aged 29, Gunner Royal Marine Artillery; disease or hurt, diarrhoea dysenteric. Put on sick list, 28 May 1877, at Hong Kong. Discharged to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 5 June 1877.

Folio 42: William R Abbott, aged 39, Engineer; disease or hurt, hernia and debility. Put on sick list, 1 May 1877, at sea en route from Singapore to Hong Kong. Invalided, 18 May 1877, and discharged to HMS Tamar for passage to England. He had sustained a rupture five years earlier serving in HMS Himalaya and had worn a truss since.

Folio 43: Charles F Bunker, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, otitis. Put on sick list, 21 April 1877. Invalided, 18 May 1877, and discharged to HMS Tamar for passage to England.

Folio 43: Joseph Mitchell, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, vertigo. Invalided, 18 May 1877, and discharged to HMS Tamar for passage to England. On 21 May 1876 he had been exposed to unusual fatigue and influence of the sun for a prolonged period since that time he had been on the sick list a number of times.

Folios 43-44: Daniel McCarthy, aged 22, Private Royal Marine Light Infantry; disease or hurt, eczema (leg). Invalided, 18 May 1877, and discharged to HMS Tamar for passage to England. Had been on the list for 139 days between 23 April 1876 and 18 May 1877.

Folios 44-45: John Brady, aged 42, Stoker; disease or hurt, cardiac disease and debility. Put on sick list, 21 February 1877. Invalided, 18 May 1877, and discharged to HMS Tamar for passage to England.

Folio 45: Wallace Harris, aged 24, Private Royal Marine Light Infantry; disease or hurt, syphilis and bubo. Put on sick list, 19 June 1877, at Hong Kong. Discharged, 5 July 1877.

Folios 45-46: William Burgess, aged 28, Stoker; disease or hurt, ulcer of foot. Invalided, 18 May 1877, and discharged to HMS Tamar for passage to England. Had been on the sick list 306 days since May 1876.

Folios 46-47: John Scott, aged 38, Cooper; disease or hurt, small pox. Put on sick list, 15 June 1877, at sea. Sent to the Civil Hospital at Shanghai, 8 July 1877. With a clinical sheet at folio 46.

Folios 47-48: Charles Christopher, aged 18, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, sunstroke and rupture of spleen. Put on sick list, 20 July 1877, at Shanghai. Sent to the Civil Hospital at Shanghai, 21 July 1877. Died, 24 July 1877. With a post mortem examination.

Folios 48-49: John Campion, aged 47, Master at Arms; disease or hurt, cardiac disease. Put on sick list, 19 June 1877, at Hong Kong. Sent to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 29 July 1877, invalided, 23 August 1879.

Folios 49-50: James Hanna, aged 22, Private Royal Marine Light Infantry; disease or hurt, cardiac disease. Put on sick list, 21 June 1877, at sea near Hong Kong. Sent to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 9 July 1877, invalided, 23 August 1877.

Folio 50: Thomas Donoghue, aged 24, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea (choleraic). Put on sick list, 11 September 1877. Sent to the General Hospital at Shanghai, 11 September 1877.

Folios 52-53: Mr Richard Tregenna, aged 31, Engineer; disease or hurt, diarrhoea dysenteric and haemorrhoids. Put on sick list, 1 July 1877, at Shanghai. Sent to the General Hospital at Shanghai, 24 August 1877, and transferred to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 1 September 1877.

Folios 54-55: Robert Nelson, aged 38, Staff Surgeon; disease or hurt, ulcer of stomach, haematemesis. Put on sick list, 14 October 1877, at Shanghai. Discharged, 26 November 1877. Had suffered repeatedly from intermittent fever when it was prevalent on board and was in hospital in Shanghai with remittent fever from 10 July to 10 August 1877. There are further notes on the case at folios 127 to 129.

Folios 55-56: Joel Austin, aged 31, Sergeant; disease or hurt, febris continued, pneumonia, phthisis? Put on sick list, 2 September 1877, at Shanghai. Discharged to the Royal Naval Hospital at Hong Kong, 18 October 1877.
