Content: Folios 499-501. Letter from the Reverend Stephen Clissold, Rector of Wrentham, to the Poor Law Commission, acknowledging receipt of their letter, dated 20 December 1835, and pointing out that he is not a magistrate. Enclosed is a copy of an anonymous letter he has received. Reference is made to a meeting the previous Monday, attended by Dr Kay [James Philip Kay, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], when he mentioned a house capable of supplying goods at a low cost. Clissold requests the address of the house, as he feels the board of guardians [Blything Poor Law Union] are now ready to use the 'Contract System' in London. Enclosed: copy of an anonymous letter addressed to Clissold, dated 29 December 1835. The letter threatens a battle at Bulcamp House with a 'mob' of 4,000-5,000 persons. There is also a threat to burn the house down, and a personal attack on Clissold saying 'If I can see you Gain you shall Nott live long for you Are A raskle And a rage to your self'. The letter concludes with 'for I the Duke of Barle Corn And you the Duke of fools you long Shurk'. Poor Law Union Number 432. Counties: Suffolk.
