Description:
Content: Folios 213-214. Draft letter from the Secretary of the Poor Law Commission [Edwin Chadwick] to the clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union [William Ashton]. He acknowledges receipt of Ashton's letter of 1 February 1837 which enquired who should pay the fee of £1 1s 0s for a consultation for a pauper patient. The Commissioners' decision is that the fee must be charged to the account of the parish to which the pauper belongs. He then requests that Ashton will call the attention of the guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union to the amount of out relief ordered for the week following the meeting on the 31 January 1837, as the Commissioners feel that the amount is considerably increasing, and that it is nearly double that afforded in the adjoining Nottingham Union of a similar, though larger population. He adds that the Commissioners will be glad to receive any information Ashton may supply concerning sick clubs and benevolent societies in the Basford Poor Law Union. Paper Number: 829/C/1837. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
