| Folios 187-188. Letter from William Ashton, [Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union], to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Ashton reports on a meeting on 13 December 1836, attended by Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, V Chair, [Vice Chairman]; and the guardians of Arnold, Lambley, Nuthall, Carlton, Clifton, Basford and Newstead. The relieving officers books were examined and out-relief ordered to the amount of £84 9s 8½d for the ensuing week. Orders to tradesmen 'according to the estimate in the Provision Book' were signed, and cases of applicants for relief were decided. A further meeting was held 20 December 1836, attended by Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, V Chair [Vice Chairman]; and the guardians of Wollaton, Beeston, Basford, Greasley, Bridgeford. Ashton states that Mary Brown applied for the position of schoolmistress to the children in the Basford Workhouse. Proposed by Farrand and seconded by Mr Roberts, she was appointed unanimously, at a pay of 5s per week, to attend for 5 hours per day. It was proposed by Mr Brown and seconded by Mr Roberts that the clerk should write to the parishes in arrears with the treasurer, and request that they pay their respective amounts on or before 24 December 1836. Passed unanimously. The relieving officers' books were examined and out relief ordered to the amount of £84 13s 8d for the ensuing week. Orders to several Tradesmen were signed.
