| Folios 170-171. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], reporting on the meeting of the Guardians at the Basford workhouse. Present were: Henry Smith, Chairman; George Farrand, Vice Chairman; [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], Guardians from basford, Greasley, Beeston, Wollaton, Papplewick, Bradmore, Carlton, Bilbro [Bilborough], Barton, Arnold, Selston, Calverton and Ilkestone [Ilkeston, Derbyshire]. Motions were proposed by the following: Farrand, Mr Chouler, Mr Carlin, Mr Walker and Gulson and seconded by Chouler, Mr Aslin, Mr Cheetham and Walker, respectively for the following resolutions. That William Massey supply coffins to the workhouse. That the Register office be in the union workhouse and Ashton to be the Superintendant Registrar if approved by the Registrar General. That Farrand, Mr Brown and Mr Roberts to appoint a schoolmistress. A copy of the letter from the Poor Law Commission to be placed in the Nottingham newspapers. Vegetables be cultivated on ground round the workhouse. That no bills from Overseers be paid, except for food in cases to prevent starvation and destitution. Relieving Officers books examined.
