Workhouse Inspection Report Form from W H Toovey Hawley, Assistant the Poor Law Commissioner, to the [Poor Law Board], reporting his inspection of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Union Workhouse on 27 March 1848; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates. He notes a temporary surge in the number of fever cases, the need for 'a Dead house', and the tendency of the schoolmaster to push scholars too fast to the detriment of 'grounding them properly in rudimental exercises'.
