Description:
Content: Folio 38. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, acknowledging the receipt of two letters dated 29 March and 27 May asking for information concerning the wages paid to children in the workhouse who go to work in the factories, and to whom the wages are paid. He wishes to state that the wages paid to the two boys in question, Eli Smith and Watson Longbottom was 4s each, but the boys both left the workhouse on 22 March. There are now only two boys sent out to work at the factory and they are both from the Keighley Workhouse. They are John Scott aged 12 and John McCarthon aged 13. They are paid 2s a week each and the wages are taken and applied in reduction of the workhouse charges. Mr Spencer apologises for the delay in answering the letters but he did not have the information required and the letter escaped his attention. Annotation: from H B Farnall, [Poor Law Inspector]. He has considered the letter coupled with the letter 12704 and this affirms that the article 114 has been adhered to, 31 May 1851. Paper Number: 23871/1851. Poor Law Union Number 571.
