Description:
Content: Folios 357-358. Letter from Sir John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] to the Poor Law Commission. The letter commends the initiative of [Patrick Hogg], Porter of Berwick-upon-Tweed Workhouse, and an old soldier, in devising a record book of vagrant paupers. He does this firstly because he considers it could usefully be adopted in other unions 'infested' with vagrants; secondly he asks the Commissioners to write to the clerk to Berwick-upon-Tweed Board of guardians signifying their approval of the porter's zeal and intelligence. He encloses one page of the book as an example. Names and Description of casual poor relieved by Berwick-upon-Tweed Union from 23 Mar 1840 to 26 Jul 1840.
