Description:

Folio 1: 20 May 1819, 155 convicts received from the brig Atlas. Two or three slight catarrhs and twelve with slight sores on their legs. Bedding and two pairs of shoes issued to each man.

Folio 1: 21 May 1819, James Tucker, scrotal hernia, reduced and a truss applied. Michael Gilligan, griping. 25 more prisoners received form Cork, making the full complement of 180.

Folio 2: Hugh Carr, Soldier, applied on the 8th with venereal [disease], sore throat, extensive ulceration. On the 15th May his mouth became sore, ulceration now gradually healing.

Folio 2: 22 May 1819, Owen Lennon, Patrick Fitzsimmons and Michael Doud, all with dyspnoea. Hugh Campbell and Thomas Birmingham with headache and slight pyrexia. Several others with slight headache and cough.

Folio 2: 23 May 1819, Jonathon Bunting, Soldier, has for some time had an eruption about the scrotum, perineum and anus, says he has never had venereal complaints though the eruption resembles one, mercurial lotion prescribed. Lennon and Fitzsimmons better. John [Horrick], Prisoner, headache, slight pyrexia and constipation. 6 other prisoners with slight headaches and irregular bowels.

Folio 3: 24 May 1819, Edward Cullin, John Campbell and Andrew Higgins, Prisoners, slight cold, headache and irregularity of bowels. Patrick Gogarty, Prisoner, has an extensive ill conditioned ulceration on the left cheek extending over his eye. Hugh Carr and John Bunting much the same.

Folio 3: 25 May 1819, Terence McManus and Patrick McMahon, Prisoners, headaches and slight pyrexia. Edmond Doyle and Francis [Mulleady], Prisoners, griping, [...], small stools. Mark Rafferty and John Faden, headaches and general pain in their limbs, also Patrick Blake.

Folio 3: 26 May 1819, 6 more headaches, irregularity of bowels, more or less constipated. William [Hugh?] Carr, Soldier, improves gradually.

Folio 4: 27 May 1819, Gogarty’s ulceration throwing off sloughs and clearing fast. Carr's ulceration in his throat cleaner and healing. Bunting’s eruption and ulceration looking cleaner. Cases of irregularity of bowels and constipation are free from complaint.

Folio 4: 28 May 1819, Gogarty, Carr and Bunting continue improving. Got under way at 1:30 and made sail out of the harbour. James Hayley, severe headache, pain in his back and limbs, hoarseness and sore throat.

Folio 4: 29 May 1819, decks wet and filthy from the men’s seasickness, had it scrubbed clean. John Carr, Jonathan Bunting and Patrick Gogarty all to have tea and sugar. James Hayley had a restless night, cathartic treatment continues.

Folio 5: 30 May 1819, James Dunn, costiveness. Bibles, testaments, prayer books and psalters issued. Prayers read by several men in parties and well attended by both Catholics and protestants.

Folio 5: 31 May 1819, James Tucker constipated. Dennis Brady, John Dunn and John Moran, headache, oppression at the precordia, frequent nausea and constipated bowels. From the height that the ship carries her scuttles it has been possible to keep them open all day without taking in water from the heavy seas.

Folio 5: 1 June 1819, John Quinn, Edmond Duffy and Frank [Francis] Mulleady, Prisoners, severe headaches and pains in their limbs. Thomas Cosgrave, headache and constipation. John Dean, headache with constant purging.

Folio 6: 2 June 1819, seasickness still prevailing to a great extent and decks wet and dirty in consequence. John Dean better. Jonathan Dunn to have congee water for common drink, George Huston the same. Thomas Cunningham and James Rice, constipated bowels. John Tandy, Boy, bowels costive. Patrick McMahon, headache and oppression at the precordia and constipation. Terence McManus, headache with severe cough, bowels costive. Dennis Barry, constipated.

Folio 6: 3 June, Rochfort’s cathartic has not operated.

Folio 6: 3 June 1819, Hayley labouring under slight pectoral obstruction, given sago and wine and a flannel waistcoat. Thomas Sweeney, headache, bowels costive.

Folio 7: 4 June 1819, Hayley improves rapidly, Gogarty's mouth a little better. Huston and Dean, old men, complain of nothing but debility and impaired appetite. Rochford Richard still constipated. John Hughes has an eruption. Bernard Cochrane, John Campbell and Thomas Bunns, headache, oppression at the precordia and constipated bowels. James Rodgers, headache, oppression about the precordia. John Sweeny, an old man with complete paralysis in the right side, complains of diarrhoea and great debility.

Folio 7: 5 June 1819, Hayley improves, Gogarty's mouth still sore.

Folio 7: 5 June 1819, [Gogarty's] face entirely healed. Martin Connell, costiveness, no other complaint. Richard Rochfort, slight headache, nausea and want of appetite.

Folio 8: 6 June 1819, Peter Levins, slight headache. William Kirk, frequent griping and frequent bloody stools. Oliver Richards and Sweeny complain with frequent purging, no griping or fever. At divine service issued one testament to each mess and some religious tracts.

Folio 8: 7 June 1819, Gogarty's mouth continues swelled and sore, the ulceration about his face and head entirely healed. Bunting’s eruption all quite healed, mouth gently sore. Carr's throat heals slowly, mouth and gums gently sore. Sweeny still complains of debility.

Folio 9: 7 June 1819, John Burns, headache and constipated bowels, also James Rodgers, Thomas Hale and S Kelly, Soldier.

Folio 9: 8 June, James Rodgers, severe headache, nausea and pains in his limbs. Sweeny, Richards and Kirk much better. Patrick Fallon, John McCartny and Thomas Salmon, headaches, bowels costive. Jonathan Campbell, Jonathan Burns and Hugh Grogan, constipation. Mrs Sergeant Murphy was safely delivered of a daughter. Hayley, Sweeny, Richards and Kirk, nearly free from complaint.

Folio 9: 9 June 1819, Patrick Fallon, headache, b[owels] not quite freed. James Rice, headache, b[owels] bound. Hayley has no complaints but slight cough. Gogarty's mouth healing, face quite healed.Philip Casy, Daniel Farrel, Francis Malady [Mulleady], slight headaches and constipated bowels.

Folio 10: 10 June 1819, Salvages [Savage Islands] in sight. Thomas Salmon, violent headache, pain in his back and limbs. Edward Cullin, constipation. Casy's cathartic operated but still complains with headache. Patrick Fallon, headache and bowels constipated. [Thomas] Salmon, headache, restlessness and increasing with great anxiety and depression of spirits.

Folio 10: 11 June 1819, Teneriffe [Tenerife] in sight. William Cain, still complains with headache. Michael Lane, constipation and slight headache. Anchored in Teneriffe [Tenerife] roads to procure water and fresh beef and vegetables.

Folio 10: 12 June 1819, James Hayley still complains of pains [and stitches] in his sides with slight cough and dyspnoea, at times with debility.

Folio 11: 12 June 1819, William Cain and Michael Lane quite well. The men with small sores have been healing and the number of them is much reduced. ‘From the tardiness of the Spaniards’ watering has just been completed at 3pm, weighed anchor at 4pm. John Dunn, Edward Duffy and John English, slight headache, constipated bowels, no fever. Henry Flannagan, slight headache and heat of skin.
