Description:

Folios 357-358. Southwell Workhouse inspection report, completed by Henry Stevens, Local Government Inspector. Figures are given of the size and population of the Southwell Union, the numbers of paupers maintained and the cost for the half year ending Ladyday 1892. There is a breakdown of the types and conditions of paupers in the workhouse. The Medical Officer is reported to visit 3 times a week and a paid nurse has been employed since a previous inspection. The bathroom of the female receiving ward is reported to be in a poor state. The children go to local day schools and are well managed. The male vagrant ward has been very full, with work arrangements judged fairly good. Questions are answered about the Visiting Committee, the water supply, the keeping of accounts and adherence to the regulations. Stevens discusses the provision of an infectious ward and also comments that the nursery children's dormitory requires alterations. He says that the workhouse was quiet and orderly.
