Reference: HO 17/40/125
Description:

1 individual petition (James Brown, friend of the prisoner) and 1 collective petition (23 people of Chelmsford), on behalf of James Ewen, farm labourer, convicted at Essex Winter Assizes held at Chelmsford in December 1830 for arson, property of John Sachs, farmer, on 5 November 1830. There is an appeal against the sentence from Lord Melbourne and Henry Coates Tomelbourne. Grounds for clemency: there is no evidence to establish that Ewen was present at the site of the fire when this was started or that he left his house during the night, which would not have been possible without passing through his landlord's bedroom. Initial sentence: death. Day of execution 24 December 1830. FP22
