Folio 12: case no. 30, Michael Haggerty, aged 22, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, while on duty at one of the main deck’s guns on star board side the 10 inch shell exploded between deck, bones of the face, skull, brain and its membranes scattered.

Folios 12-13: case no. 31, Patrick Flemming, aged 22, Private Royal Marine Light Infantry; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, struck by a splinter of wood on the head, extravasation of blood into the base of skull.

Folio 13: case no. 32, Richard Lindsay, aged 26, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, struck by a splinter of wood on the head and fractured of the base of skull, during the action with the Fort of Kugoshima on 15 August.

Folio 13: case no. 33, John Warren, aged 18, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, frontal, parietal and occipital bones shattered with brain and its membrane.

Folio 13: case no. 34, James Smith, aged 22, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, compound comminated fracture of skull and pelvis.

Folio 13: case no. 35, William Yardley, aged 22, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, killed by the same as above cases, compound comminated fracture and laceration of brain.

Folio 13: case no. 36, John Hawkins, aged 18, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, struck by a piece of the ten inch shell which caused much destruction among the men working on the main deck. The man was brought into the cockpit in a state of complete collapse on examination found a large rugged and irregularly shaped wound in the right groin, also compound fracture of left arm by a splinter, died from exhaustion at 7.30 pm.

Folios 13-14: case no. 37, Thomas Harding, aged 18, Boy 1st Class; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, brought into the cockpit with case no. 36, with compound comminuted fracture of right arm at the insertion of the detoid muscle and division of the vessels and nerves an [enormous?] wound of the corresponding side of the chest; the soft part were found to be completely torn off from the ribs below the right axilla the 5th, 6th and 7th ribs were broken in several places…; died 16 August 1863 at 10 pm, [including post mortem reported].

Folios 14-16: case no. 38, William Howden, aged 26, Private Marine; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, struck by a portion of a ten inch shell while working on the main deck gun, the right side of the face and neck frightfully torn and shattered by the missile the wound extended from the corner of the mouth as far back as the zygoma superiorly and the sternomastoid muscle a little below the angle of the lower jaw, inferiorly the soft parts were completely torn away from the bones laying opened the cavity of the mouth…[The Surgeon’s described the operation on the patient by ligature of the artery, without the chloroform due to the nature of the injury, however the operation was successful, the patient convalescent, but suddenly cholera set in and carried him off]; died 17 September 1863 at 11 pm, [including post mortem reported and drawing of ligature of the artery].

Folio 17: case no. 39, William Rundle, aged 21, Carpenter’s Crew; sick or hurt, continued fever; put on sick list 8 August 1863 at sea, died 18 August 1863 at 2 am.

Folios 17-18: case no. 40, Henry Bray, aged 22, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, compound comminuted fracture of skull, while coiling a rope in the launch on the upper deck when an Ordinary Seaman named “Grover” fell from the Main Top and alighted upon him whilst he was in a stooping position with his head inclined downwards and propelled him with great force against a ring bolt; put on sick list 25 August 1863 at sea, died 26 August 1863.

Folio 18: case no. 41, William Lear, aged 37, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, phthisis; put on sick list 31 March 1863 at Yokohama, discharged 17 June 1863 to Civil Hospital at Yokohama, invalided 14 November 1863, sent 19 November 1863 on board the Centaur for England.

Folios 18-19: case no. 42, William Collins, aged 32, Carpenter’s Crew; sick or hurt, dysentery, he joined this ship from “Coquette” which he took for passage from Hong Kong Naval Hospital where he was under treatment for dysentery (see case no. 21); put on sick list 1 May 1863 at Yokohama, invalided 14 November 1863, sent 19 November 1863 on board the Centaur for England.

Folios 19-20: case no. 43, Thomas Lattimore, aged 40, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 6 May 1863 at Yokohama, discharged 17 June 1863 to Civil Hospital at Yokohama, invalided 14 November 1863, sent 19 November 1863 on board the Centaur for England.

Folio 20: case no. 44, John Williams, aged 26, Leading Stoker; sick or hurt, phthisis, he joined this ship from the “Drake” gunboat, was suffering from dyspepsia for some time; put on sick list 6 June 1863 at Yokohama, discharged 17 June 1863 to Civil Hospital at Yokohama, invalided 14 November 1863.
