Description:
Content: Folio 17. Memorandum of [William Willoby and Edward Willoby] Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding the case of John Downey and his family, who were ordered to be removed to the township of Norham having become chargeable to the Preston Poor Law Union, Lancashire. A letter, dated 30 December 1840, to the [Poor Law Commissioners] enclosed a copy of the resolution of the board that noted a claim from the overseers of Preston of 2/9 for expenses incurred in serving a suspended order for removal on the above-mentioned pauper. The opinion of the Commissioners was sought as to whether or not the township of Norham was liable for this sum since the overseers of Preston allowed 11 days to elapse without sending copies of the 'Examination Removal Warrant' by post. The Commissioners replied that the expenses were not recoverable against Norham since the paupers had not been removed. The board wrote to the Commissioners, on 22 January 1841, drawing attention to the fact that the real objection had been overlooked. As yet a reply to this letter has not been received. Annotated: refer to Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Poor Law Union Number 325. Counties: Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and North Durham [detached].
